How to get the food right at your next birthday party
Summary:
- One dish nobody's had before tends to be the one everyone asks about on the way out.
- Vegetarian dishes should be things guests actually want, not things they settle for.
- The spread should match the time of day. Lighter for afternoons, something more substantial for evenings.
- Clear labels means nobody has to ask. When the setup flows, guests stay longer.
Birthdays are about the people in the room. The food is what gets them talking. A guest finds something they hadn’t tried before and goes back for it twice. Someone else’s still talking about it on the way out.Â
Whether it's 12 people in your living room or 50 in a condo function room, your only job is the guest list. Start with knowing your crowd, and we’ll sort the rest from there.
What makes a birthday spread work?
The best spreads usually pair something familiar with something guests haven’t tried before. Levantine Cauliflower and Hummus, topped with pink peppercorn, for example. Ingredients people know, in a combination nobody expected. It's the kind of dish that makes guests stop and ask what's in it.
Food that sparks conversation
Think Nagoya Chicken Bites tossed in an addictive spice blend, inspired by a dish our chefs ate too much of in Japan. Or handcrafted canapés that give people something to talk about before they've even found a seat. Â
These are the kind of things people reach for without thinking, then find themselves mid-conversation with whoever’s nearby. "Have you tried the chicken bites yet?" does more for the room than most party games.
The spread stays generous
Conversations make people hungrier than you'd expect. Space the portions nicely so the table looks full from the first guest to the last. There's always enough for seconds, so nobody has to think twice about going back for more.
One dish nobody expected
At every party we cater, there's one dish that catches people off guard. Ours is the Ispahan Sweet and Sour Parrotfish. Fish in rose essence, honey pineapple and lychee in a sweet and sour sauce that sounds like it shouldn't work, but it absolutely does. People pick it up expecting something familiar, and end up getting something better.
Something for every guest
Vegetarian options shouldn't be the dishes people politely take because there's nothing else. Our Korean Bibim Salad and Plant-Based Beef Lasagna aren't there as backups. They're dishes people go back for.
When the vegetarian options are genuinely good, the non-vegetarians end up enjoying them too. Not out of obligation, but just because they want to.
What goes into a good setup?
Now that the menu's in place, the setup should feel just as easy.Â
The time of day matters
Afternoon gatherings do better with lighter bites, and our high tea catering menu is built for that. Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Crowich, Matcha Pistachio Cake, the kind guests can pick up mid-sentence without needing a plate and a seat.
Evening parties call for something more substantial. The Tuscan Garlic Cream Dory from our buffet catering menu, slow-cooked with sundried tomatoes, black olives and spinach, is the kind of dish that anchors the spread.
A setup that takes care of itself
We set things up so guests can reach everything easily, come back for more, and not have to queue for their own birthday party. Desserts and drinks have their own corner, so the main table doesn’t jam up.
For evening parties, live stations are worth it. They have a way of drawing everyone in without anyone planning it that way. Guests hang around, make small talk, and leave with something freshly made.
We've thought of the rest
Clear labels on everything, so nobody has to ask at every dish. A back-up platter that comes out about an hour in, so the table always looks generous. Everything on the day is taken care of, so you can actually enjoy being there.
